What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an advanced injectable treatment made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA-SCA™) a biocompatible, biodegradable material that has been safely used in medicine for over 30 years. Unlike traditional dermal fillers that add instant volume by filling space beneath the skin, Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s own fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin, gradually rebuilding the skin’s natural support structure from within.

How Sculptra works
Sculptra contains PLLA-SCA™ Galderma’s unique and proprietary poly-L-lactic acid formulation. When injected into the deep dermis, it stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, to rebuild the skin’s natural structural framework. As the PLLA microparticles are gradually absorbed by the body, newly formed collagen and elastin take their place, progressively improving skin thickness, firmness and volume.
Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which provide immediate but temporary volume, Sculptra’s effects accumulate over time. The skin becomes progressively firmer, more voluminous and more resilient across all three skin layers with the full result visible approximately three to six months after completing a course of treatment.
Because results build gradually, Sculptra follows a treat, wait and reassess protocol ensuring natural, balanced correction at every stage and avoiding over-treatment.

Preparing for your Sculptra
01
One week before
Avoid aspirin (unless medically prescribed), ibuprofen and other non-prescribed anti-inflammatory medications, which can increase bruising risk.

48 hours before
Avoid alcohol, which thins the blood and increases bruising. Avoid prolonged sun exposure or sunbeds.

On the day
Come to your appointment with clean skin, no makeup on the areas to be treated. Stay well hydrated. Eat a light meal before your appointment.
Please tell us at consultation if you:
- Have any active skin infections, cold sores or breakouts in the treatment area
- Are taking blood-thinning medication
- Have had recent dental work or facial procedures in the last two weeks
- Have any known allergies to injectable treatments or anaesthetic products
- Are planning facial surgery in the near future
Your Sculptra experience
Consultation
A thorough facial assessment is carried out to evaluate your suitability and understand your aesthetic goals. Your treatment plan, including the recommended number of sessions, is discussed and agreed upon before any commitment is made.
Immediately after
The treated area will be massaged to help distribute the product evenly. An ice pack will be applied to reduce swelling. You can return to most normal activities the same day.
The procedure
A topical numbing cream is applied prior to treatment for comfort. Sculptra is then injected using fine needles into the deep dermis of the targeted areas, following a precise grid pattern to ensure even distribution. Treatment typically takes 45–60 minutes.
You may notice some swelling at the end of your session; this is due to the water used to reconstitute the product and will settle within a few hours to a few days. This is not your final result.
In the weeks following
The initial swelling resolves within a few days, and the original contour may temporarily reappear; this is completely normal and expected. Sculptra's effect builds gradually as your skin's collagen and elastin production increases. Visible improvement typically begins around six to eight weeks.
At your review
You will be assessed no sooner than four weeks after each session to determine whether further treatment is needed. The treat, wait and reassess approach ensures you never receive more than your skin actually requires.
Full results
Peak results are visible approximately three to six months after completing your course, as collagen and elastin continue to build progressively.
Sculptra Aftercare
The 5-5-5 massage rule is essential and specific to Sculptra. Please follow it carefully, it significantly reduces the risk of nodule formation.
📌 Massage the treated areas for 5 minutes, 5 times per day, for 5 days after each session. Use a facial moisturiser to perform the massage. This promotes even distribution of the product and significantly reduces the risk of nodule formation.
First 24 Hours
Apply an ice pack (wrapped in cloth, no direct skin contact) to reduce swelling and bruising
Avoid makeup for at least a few hours, or until any redness has resolved
Keep the treated area clean
For 48 hours after treatment
Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that raise your core temperature
Avoid alcohol
Avoid saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds
Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area
Ongoing
Apply SPF daily to protect and support your skin
Stay well hydrated
Avoid aspirin (unless medically prescribed) for five days post-treatment

Dermal fillers add immediate volume using hyaluronic acid, which sits in the tissue and can
be dissolved. Sculptra works differently — it stimulates your own collagen and elastin
production over time. Results are more gradual but significantly longer-lasting, and the effect
is driven by your own biology rather than an external substance.
Subtle improvements typically begin from around six to eight weeks after your first session,
with full results visible approximately three to six months after completing your course. Results
continue to build progressively across sessions.
